About Me

I have been working in the Business Intelligence field exclusively since 2007. Before that, I was using various reporting tools, principally Crystal Reports, since 1994.

From 2007-2016, my BI focus was on the SAP tool set, using the full range of the BI Suite (Web Intelligence, Dashboards/xCelsius, SAP Lumira, Crystal Reports and Desktop Intelligence). Because of the depth and breadth of my knowledge of these tools, in my role as BI Specialist at Interior Health Authority, I was often the “go-to” person for the complicated reports, coming up with innovative solutions, and being able to present this data in new ways to the organization, allowing them to gain insights into the data to enable better decision making.

Since 2016, I have been mainly using the Microsoft stack (SSIS, SSAS, SSMS, SSRS), and more recently as the team lead for the data warehouse, I was involved with procuring, installing and configuring Jira and Bitbucket (Git) and upgrading Decision Support to SQL Server 2016.  I have also been involved with Tableau Server (from an administration perspective) and Denodo for data virtualisation.  I have also had a heavy influence on Automated testing.

My Dashboard solutions have been very innovative, and brought many benefits to my employers, as well as receiving national recognition for a Healthcare Dashboard, monitoring various KPIs in an extensible manner. This dashboard was rewarded with a Federal Government of Canada Technology (GTEC) award for “Transforming the Business of Government”. The managers dashboard that I helped design and build is providing insights into employee work history, allowing managers to find patterns in behaviour, as well as monitor and keep track of their budgets. It’s designed to allow managers to quickly access the information they need, but should they need to, some on-demand reporting is built in to allow them greater analysis of the data.

I have built many and maintained data marts for many subject areas including Surgical, Payroll, Admission/Discharge, Emergency and Financial.  Typically these were built using Kimball’s method, though overtime these have evolved to become more of a hybrid model between Kimball and Inmon.  The traditional star schema model and snowflake models are typical of the approaches that I use.
